Using My Scraps

For my travel albums, I want to create some continuity across so many layouts, so I pull papers and embellishments that I can use throughout the album.  This leaves me with lots of scraps, but I like to use as many as I can, both for the continuity and because I need to use some things up!  The sketch I used for this layout was great for using up some of those scraps.

Even though its a bit shabby, everything in Budapest has that European grandeur.  Take this coffee shop for example: gilded elements, painted ceilings, and chandeliers.  And it was upstairs from basically a Barnes and Nobel.

I loved using the one bottle of October Afternoon sprinklers I own with Tim Holtz kraft resist paper.  I adapted a Sketches for Scrapbooking sketch to showcase only 3 photos and a business card, and the element on the resist paper in the center.

Stretch Your Stash

I admit it.  I have a massive scrapbook stash.  Some (I'm looking at you, my darling husband) might say its too much stuff.  And I have way too much holiday themed stuff, especially Halloween and Christmas.  I cannot resist those super-cute holiday collections every year.  And because Ozzy the cat does not like to go trick-or-treating, I really don't get to use up those holiday items.

So I like to try to incorporate these items into non-holiday layouts.  It's a good way to use what you have on hand, and to make that stash stretch.  Did I mention I've given up scrapbook shopping for Lent?

On this layout, I had a red, black, and silver color scheme.  I thought I could work in paper flowers from Girls Paperie's Christmas collection without the layout turning Christmas-y.  I picked up some green with letter stickers and in other elements, and I think I pulled it off.  What do you think?

Prague Train Station

Going to Prague, and particularly Budapest, was like walking into a museum.  It was like time stopped before Communism, in so much of both of these cities.  I wandered upstairs in the ultra-modern Prague train station, and it was like the Land That Time Forgot.  Hidden away, with almost no visitors but an open cafe, was an unrefurbished Art Deco gem.  I hope Prague puts some effort into restoring this beautiful treasure, as they have with so many of their other treasures.

My “Can’t Live Without These” Stamps

If you didn’t already know, Ali Edwards designs stamps for Technique Tuesday.  Along with stamps for the regular line, there are limited edition stamps for the monthly kit club.  The club runs about $20 including shipping, and its been totally worth it.  My first 6 months are up, and I’ll be renewing.  The stamps are so cute and versatile that I even tracked down some of the prior month’s sets.

I’ve been using the stamps on a lot of layouts, and I used them to make my sister’s birthday card.  Yes, that’s pink glitter cardstock!

Back into the Photo Archives - I Wanna Be a Cowgirl

Do you ever have a project that doesn’t end up being anything like you had pictured when you started?  That’s how this layout went.  When I found the photos, I wanted to do something graphic, like an “I Shot Andy Warhol” sort of a feel.  I made the faux-laroids and hit “Ship” on Shutterfly.  But then I dug into my stash of Crate PaperRestoration”…

Cowgirl Up!

New Layouts, Old Photos

Like most scrapbookers, I have a backlog of pictures to scrap.  Taking classes at Big Picture has helped get my butt in gear and scrap some of these older photos.  That's a good thing, because I got all of my childhood albums from my mom, and I want to scan and scrap them.  (Let this be a lesson to you -- take your photos out of those old magnetic albums, if you can, and burn those horrible magnetic pages!!  Photos grow to them over time!)

This one is from 2006:

For the Love of Antique Tractors

What is it with men and antique tractors?  My father in law collects and restores them.  My brother in law keeps a broken on in my sister's garage.

My husband likes antique tractors, although I think he really just likes driving tractors.  My photos of them were by far the best seller in my etsy store, to the point that is almost all I offer anymore.

Our annual trip to Old Time Farm Day offers a plethora of photo ops of antique tractors, some restored, some nice and rusty.

The men that bring them are so so proud of their tractors.  Almost like they are their grandchildren.  Almost.

Farm Day Tractors

Tractors have evidently affected my subliminal.  I didn't intend on the title cluster to look like a tractor, and didn't realize it did until I was done with the layout!

Dreaming of a New House…Literally

Mark and I are moving.  Now, we have to do some renovations and replace carpet, so the house isn’t even on the market yet.  But we’re still moving.  We’ve been looking around at new houses, and it’s about all we talk about.  So it’s no surprise that it’s crept into the subliminal.  I’ve been having very vivid dreams lately about buying houses and touring houses.  It's keeping me up at night, and I can’t wait until we find one, hopefully with a room I can devote to my scrap stuff!

Until then, I wanted to capture some of my feelings and memories about our current house.  It’s another layout from the Use Your Stash class.

This Door

The chipboard letters are from  the Dollar Spot at Target from ages ago, but they were teal striped, so I painted them with Tim Holtz Distress Paint, which sort of flaked off, so I sealed them with Diamond Glaze.  Also, I read somewhere about stamping on cork, so I pulled out a package of Quickutz cork, cut the scalloped circles with the Cuttlebug, and stamped it with Staz-On ink.

Products used:
JoAnne’s – Kraft Cardstock; Core’dinations – cardstock; MME – patterned paper; Sassafrass – patterned paper; October Afternoon – patterned paper; Target Dollar Spot – chipboard letters, brads; Quickutz – cork; Offray – ribbon; We R Memory Keepers – brads; Karen Foster – brad; Tim Holtz – Distress Paint; Diamond Glaze; Staz-on – Inks

Tools used:
Cuttlebug, Cuttlebug Swiss Dot embossing folder, Nestabilities scalloped circle die
